The global motorcycle industry (including mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, and undercarriages) has gradually recovered during 2023, reporting sales of 62.5 million units, a growth of 2.6%.
The media has collected data on new two-wheeler registrations sold in 92 countries, and looking at the combined sales figures from these countries, the top 10 brands have remained virtually unchanged from last year, with four Chinese manufacturers taking the lead. However, just as in the last 50 years, the leader remains Honda , and it is well known that the Japanese manufacturer dominates the industry, with about a third of the industry in its hands.
In 2023, the low 1 Honda global two-wheeler sales were 18.4 million units (4.3%), an increase of almost 700,000 units over last year. No. 2 is the Indian HERO hero motorcycle factory, which confirmed its position by claiming the throne in India thanks to sales of 5.6 million units (5.4%). The 3rd position was taken by Yamaha with 4.6 million units (0.9%). Yamaha's 7.5% market share is 5 percentage points lower than last year's result. At #4 is bajaj India, with sales of 3.6 million units (8.7%) thanks to strong domestic performance.
At No. 5 is the fastest-growing Indian car manufacturer TVS, with 3.4 million units sold (19.8 percent).
At No. 5, Yadea is down three spots from last year, as the electric two-wheeled specialty brand seems to be stuck in a stagnant growth rut. 2.5 million EVs were sold in 2023, down 49.7% year-on-year. At No. 7 is Rapid Recovery Suzuki with sales of 1.9 million units (7.1%).
On top of that, there are three other Chinese giants at the bottom of the list: Haojue Loncin and Zongshen.
